2.1. Which of these Blackburn Conservative commitments are the most important to you?
Labour have scrapped free parking at Witton Park. From the 1st March it will no longer be free to park at Witton Park, instead seeing a charge of between 50p and £1.50. This is on top of the thousands of pounds spent to install the ticket machines. VOTE CONSERVATIVE and we will re-instate free parking and instead look for ways to give money back.
Last year, our Labour-controlled council introduced a new garden tax and started charging houses to collect their garden waste. This tax is completely unfair. We as residents of Blackburn already pay huge amounts in council tax; surely the least we can expect in return is for our brown bin to be emptied a few times a year. A Conservative council would abolish this charge and respect your money.
Unemployment at a 42 year low, productivity rising quickly and an economy that is back in the black after 16 years, it is clear to see that a Conservative government has strengthened our country. Help us to make Blackburn council strong, not by raising council tax or finding other ways to take more money from you. but by managing our assets correctly, spending wisely and protecting your services.
Labour want to spend an estimated £9,000,000 of your hard-earned money to build a second cinema in Blackburn on the old Waves site. Not only is this considered a waste of your money, but also another example of poorly conceived projects that could create further divisions in our town. Just another example of mismanagement and poor council policy. VOTE CONSERVATIVE and this will stop.
Rather than repair our roads our Labour council have decides to invest approximately £6 million in road changes, including widening Haslingden road, reconnecting Northgate (which was only closed a few years ago) and making it easier to cross Barbara Castle Way. Under a Conservative council, we would ensure your hard-earned money is better managed and that the existing roads are better maintained.
We have yet again seen another Council Tax increase. Every year Labour put their hand into your pocket for more money. Although Conservative councillors voted against the increase the Labour-led council increased the council tax by the maximum limit allowed, once again showing their lack of respect for your money. A Conservative council would better manage public finances.
In 2016 the Labour council pressed ahead with their controversial plans to cut weekly bin collections at a cost of 500k. If the council can find millions for another cinema then they should be able to empty the bins properly. This isn’t about a lack of funds; it’s about a lack of sensible financial management from a Labour-led council. A Conservative council would reinstate weekly collections.
Fly-tipping is a persistent problem which can blight an area. It creates a stigma and upsets residents. It is widespread and not helped by BWD, imposing charges for rubbish disposal. We pledge to work hard to assist residents by liaising with all agencies to clean up your streets.
2.2. In order to make this survey representative, how did you vote in the 2017 General Election?
